The new light heavyweight champion Jon Jones he almost didn't have the opportunity to regain his title at UFC 214. Two days before the rematch with his arch-rival Daniel Cormier, the American suffered an arm injury during training and worried his coaches. The revelation was made by Mike Winkeljohn, one of his technicians, in an interview with the “Submission Radio” program.

Winkeljohn explained that, during a wrestling practice, Jones did not warm up properly and suffered an injury to one of his arms, to the point where he was unable to lift it hours after the incident. But the coach said he admired his pupil's willpower and assured that he could only be defeated by himself.

“Two nights before the fight, Jon injured his arm during wrestling training and couldn't lift it. It was kind of scary. I think he lacked a proper warm-up, so he stopped training that part immediately. We agree with the coaches on this part. I didn't want that to affect his mentality before such a big fight. But Jon is that guy. He is very tough, and I always say that the only person who can defeat him is himself”, commented the coach.

Even with the arm problem, Jones managed a devastating knockout over Cormier in the third round, ending the rivalry with the former champion, who left the octagon in tears after realizing he had lost again to his declared enemy.
