Boxing: Maskaev and Peter decide heavyweight belt in Cancun

For the first time, the city of Cancun, Mexico, will host a world heavyweight boxing belt. This Saturday, Russian Oleg Maskaev faces Nigerian Samuel Peter to decide who will be the champion at the World B Council

oxe (CMB).

Maskaev owned the heavyweight belt until last year. However, he was unable to compete for the title due to a back injury that left him out of action for almost a year.

Thus, Samuel Peter was called up to compete for an interim belt against the American Jameel McCline in October 2007 and secured the title after winning the match on points decision.

According to the president of the World Boxing Council, José Sulaimán, Maskaev's status as world champion was respected, but it was necessary to put an interim title up for grabs to “prevent the division from remaining frozen”.

Far from the United States
The heavyweight category has already had historic world championship disputes in countries other than the United States. In 1974, Mohamed Ali and George Foreman fought in Zaire in one of the most remembered clashes in boxing. On that occasion, Ali won in eight rounds.

The following year, it was Ali's turn to defeat Joe Frazier in the Philippines in another historic fight. In 1990, Mike Tyson began the decline of his career when he lost the world title to James “Buster” Douglas in a fight in Tokyo, Japan.

The Russian himself Maskaev retained the World Boxing Council title at home in December 2006, against Peter Okhello, from Uganda. This was the first world heavyweight contest in the country.

Fatal change? Makhachev ignores warning and could end tragically at welterweight!
