Former bantamweight champion Renan Barao would return to the category where he reigned for the fight with aljamain sterling, this Saturday (29), at UFC 214. However, the Brazilian was forced to fight at catchweight, as the California Athletic Commission did not allow him to fight at 61 kg, due to previous problems with the weight cut. Barão admitted that he had bad cuts, but says that everything changed and confirmed his intention to return to bantamweight.

“Bantamweight is my division, it’s where I feel good fighting. I actually had problems before some fights, but everything has changed now. I'm eating better, I have more weight-cutting methods that work for me, and I'm feeling great. I want to return to bantamweight. I have an excellent team working with me and the rooster is my division. I make weight easily”, commented the former champion, in an interview with the North American website MMA Fighting.

Regarding the Athletic Commission's decision, Barão only said that it was a test, to see how he would react fighting at an intermediate weight between featherweight and bantamweight and also spoke about training in the United States, with his coach Jair Lourenço.

“Actually, they just want to see how I'm doing in the new category and after this fight I'll go back to bantamweight for good. I have trained with Jair Lourenço here and followed him here to the United States. I didn’t leave Nova União, I just followed my coach,” he declared.
