The new edition of the UFC rankings was released this Wednesday (19) with some new features, mainly among the light heavyweight and welterweight divisions. The former champion at 93 kg. Jon Jones returned to the list after the end of his one-year suspension for doping. He is number one in his category and reached seventh place in the weight-for-weight ranking. The Argentine achieved the biggest victory of his career when he knocked out former eighth-ranked Gunnar Nelson in the main fight of UFC Scotland, last Sunday (16). With the triumph, “Gente Boa” replaced the Icelandic in the ranking and “Gunni” fell to 11th position. Santiago's rise even left names like Rafael dos Anjos back – the former lightweight champion is ranked tenth in the welterweight division.
Other athletes who rose with victories in Glasgow were the Brazilian Alexandre pantoja and the Mexican Cynthia calvillo. The flyweight beat Neil Seery by submission and gained a position in the rankings of his division: he is now 13th. Calvillo gained six positions with his victory over JoJo Calderwood and is now the eighth best strawweight in the UFC.
Yes, Jon Jones will have the opportunity to “leave” the rankings of their division on July 29th, when they face the champion Daniel Cormier in the main fight of UFC 214. This is because belt holders are not included in the lists, which only include athletes seeking the title. For now, however, “Bones” will have to settle for the top spot in the light heavyweight rankings.
