The Dutch alistair overeem overcame a knockdown suffered in the third round to win Fabricio Werdum in the majority decision (29-28, 28-28, 29-28) of the judges at UFC 213, an event held in the early hours of this Sunday (09), in Las Vegas (USA). The result ruled the Brazilian out of a rematch against Stipe Miocic, for the heavyweight belt.

After the fight, the Dutchman admitted that he was almost knocked out by Werdum in the last round, reiterated his respect for the Brazilian, former UFC heavyweight champion, and assured that he won the first two rounds.

“I have a lot of respect for Fabricio. He caught me hard in the last round and I almost got knocked out, but I think I did enough to win, as I won the first two rounds,” he commented.

The fight

Werdum started every round with his characteristic flying, but Overeem seemed connected and was not the victim of the Brazilian's kick. Changing base all the time, the Dutchman confused “Vai Cavalo”, who tried to find the distance and used low kicks and kicks to the body of “The Reem”, who responded with accurate jabs to the Brazilian's nose. The first round was even and could have gone either way.

In the second round, the Dutchman found the distance before the Brazilian and began to have even more success with jabs and straight lefts, when he reached the southpaw base. Werdum suffered from the Dutchman's blows and got into trouble twice. The Brazilian even tried an unsuccessful takedown attempt and pulled his guard to try to apply his jiu-jitsu.

In Werdum's corner, coach Rafael Cordeiro asked the gaucho to release more blows. And that's how the former champion gained a big advantage in the final round. Seeking to decide, “Vai Cavalo” immediately found the Dutchman's chin and connected with several straight shots that left Overeem dizzy. After suffering a knockdown, the Brazilian took guard trying to land a guillotine choke, but the Dutchman soon got free.

Werdum, however, got up and soon connected more blows, taking Overeem to the cage, surrendering. The Brazilian chose to take the fight to the ground and punished his opponent from guard until the end of the fight, which ended up not being enough to guarantee victory.

Pettis returns to lightweight and beats Miller

Before Werdum vs. Overeem, the former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis successfully returned to the division that once reigned by overcoming Jim Miller in the decision. After a balanced first round, where “Showtime” stood up only in the last few minutes, landing hard blows, Miller started the second round better.

Using the pressure that so harms Pettis' style, the American managed an excellent takedown and even caught his opponent's back. The former champion managed to defend the submission attempts and achieved an excellent sweep, staying on top for the remainder of the round and punishing his rival with ground and pound.

PUBLICITY:

In the final round, the duel became more tepid, with Miller lacking the power to put pressure on Pettis and “Showtime” worried about managing the victory, as he was coming off a crushing defeat to Max Holloway. At the end, Anthony Pettis He won by unanimous decision, taking all three rounds on the scorecards of all the side judges.

After Miller x Pettis, it was the heavyweights’ turn Curtis blaydes and Daniel Omielanczuk take action. The duel was tepid, with Blaydes looking for a takedown at all times and being rejected by the Pole. The American, however, always remained in an advantageous position and used jabs to score. In the end, decision in favor of Blaydes.

Opening the main portion of UFC 213, Brazilian Douglas D'Silva couldn't resist the superior boxing of Rob font and ended up submitting in the second round after being dominated on the feet for almost nine minutes. The bantamweight resisted until the end of the second round, but Font took advantage of a mistake to get a guillotine choke.
