UFC 213 lost its main fight just hours before its start. The champion Amanda nunes suffered a health problem and was hospitalized this Saturday (8), canceling her participation in the night's biggest attraction. She would defend her bantamweight belt against Valentina Shevchenko. With this, the new main fight of the show will be the duel between Robert whittaker e Yoel romero, valid for the interim middleweight belt. The information is from the North American website MMA Fighting.
There are still no further details about the champion's health status, but journalist Ariel Helwani, from MMA Fighting, revealed that the Brazilian had been feeling discomfort throughout the week of the fight. Even so, she fulfilled her commitments to promote UFC 213 and successfully beat the weight limit for the bantamweight category (61 kg.) at the official weigh-in.
This is the third year in a row that the traditional North American Independence Week event has had to be changed. In 2015, José Aldo suffered an injury weeks before the fight with Conor McGregor and was replaced by Chad Mendes. Last year, Jon Jones was caught in an anti-doping test during the week of UFC 200 and his fight with Daniel Cormier was canceled – DC faced Anderson Silva in a duel that was not worth his light heavyweight title.
Interestingly, Amanda herself replaced the main fight on that occasion: her duel with the then champion Miesha Tate it became the main fight of UFC 200. The Lioness submitted Tate in the first round and won the belt that she would defend for the second time this Saturday.
