McGregor competes for Athlete of the Year title against Ronaldo and Bolt

Irish is competing with other sports giants at the ESPY's. Demetrious Johnson is on the Fighter of the Year list

The renowned ESPY's awards, promoted by the North American channel ESPN, recognized the unforgettable 2016 of Conor McGregor and nominated him in two categories: International Athlete of the Year and Fighter of the Year. In the first, the Irishman competes with other sports giants, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Usain Bolt and Canelo Álvarez.

Regarding his second nomination, McGregor has competition from another UFC champion. Demetrious Johnson, who had a perfect 2016 with two wins, is one of the nominees for Fighter of the Year, along with boxers Andre Ward, Gennady Golovkin and Terence Crawford.

After starting last year with an unexpected defeat to Nate diaz at UFC 196, Conor McGregor took revenge on the North American with a balanced decision victory at UFC 202, in August. Three months later, the Irishman made history by knocking out Eddie Alvarez in the second round of the UFC 205 main fight. The triumph over the “Underground King” gave McGregor the lightweight belt and he became the first athlete in history to have two titles in two different categories simultaneously in Ultimate. After the duel with Alvarez, Conor began to provoke Floyd Mayweather and the boxing duel was scheduled for August of this year.
