STJD 'saves' Gastelum and suspends fighter for just three months

Fighter, who was caught anti-doping for using marijuana, will be able to return to action in June; Fight against Vitor Belfort is 'no result'

It was cheap for Kelvin Gastelum! The American was sentenced by the Superior Court of Sports Justice in MMA (STJD-MMA) to just three months of suspension for using marijuana during the competition period at UFC Fight Night Fortaleza, on March 11th. Furthermore, the fighter was fined 20% of his salary and had a triumph against Vitor belfort, at UFC Fight Night Fortaleza transformed into a No Contest (fight without result).

What draws attention to the case is that the minimum suspension for the use of recreational drugs during competition is six months, but the admission of guilt caused the court to reduce Gastelum's suspension by half. The punishment is retroactive to the exam date, March 11. In this case, the fighter will be free to fight from June 11th.

Gastelum, who was scheduled to face Anderson Silva at UFC 212, on June 3, in Rio de Janeiro, he was removed from the card. However, even before the official announcement of the STJD-MMA, the American challenged Spider so that the duel will be held in New York, June 25th.

STJD-MMA decision on the case:

Marcelo Sedlmayer Jorge, President of the Superior Court of Sports Justice – MMA and the entity's attorney (Emmanuel Guedes Ferreira), in joint efforts with CABMMA in this act represented by Mr Cristiano Sampaio, formalized an agreement with the athlete Kelvin Gastelum, its lawyers and USADA.

PUBLICITY:

The athlete officially confessed to using the substance Carboxy – THC and publicly apologized. The athlete undertakes not to violate any other rule of the sport under penalty of application of the aggravating circumstances provided for repeat offense.

Finally, a suspension of 03 months from 11/03/2017 was fixed, as well as the payment of a fine of 20% of the scholarship received in the fight against Vitor belfort.
