12-year-old girl will face a 24-year-old adult at an MMA event in Japan

Controversial news caught the attention of the MMA world. “Deep Jewels”, a Japanese MMA event, will promote an amateur fight involving a 12-year-old child, known as “MoMo”, against Momoko Yamasaki, who is 24 years old, twice her age. The fight will take place in Tokyo, on May 20th.

The 12-year-old girl, who weighs 39kg, will debut in the under-43kg category. Yamasaki, who has been fighting MMA since 2014, already has five fights on his record, with two wins and three losses.

As it is an amateur fight, some rules are pre-established by the organization. The two fighters will wear protective helmets during the confrontation, and blows to the head with the opponent on the ground are prohibited.

Confrontations considered controversial and 'bizarre' are nothing new when it comes to Japanese MMA. Last December, Brazilian Gabi Garcia was the protagonist of one of the strangest weddings in recent years. The 31-year-old jiu-jitsu world champion was scheduled to face Yumiko Hotta, 49, at Rizin. The duel ended with a knockout applied by Gabi in just 41 seconds.
