World jiu-jitsu champion, Tanquinho debuted in the UFC in 2016 with little preparation time and ended up being knocked out by cody garbrandt, who is currently the Ultimate champion at 61 kg. After dealing with injuries for the rest of the year, he achieved his first victory, against Frankie Saenz, at UFC Phoenix, via split decision.

Sterling comes from two consecutive defeats, both by split decision, first to his compatriot Bryan caraway and, recently, at UFC Denver, against the Brazilian Raphael Assunção. The American started his career with 12 straight victories and, despite the setbacks, he is seen as a promise in the division.

UFC Kansas will have a flyweight title fight in its main event. The champion Demetrious Johnson will try to equal the record of 10 consecutive belt defenses, currently held by Anderson Silva, against the Brazilian Wilson reis. Ronaldo Jacare is also scheduled for the event: faces Robert whittaker, by average weight.
