In addition to having won and defended the UFC bantamweight title in 2016, Amanda nunes was awarded the Fighter of the Year award at the “World MMA Awards”, an event that is known as the “Oscar of MMA” and rewards the main names in the sport annually. The Brazilian beat the competition from her compatriot Chris Cyborg, And Angela Hill, Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Angela Lee, Invicta, UFC and One FC champions, respectively. Brazilian Jhenny Andrade received the award for best Ring Girl of the Year.

The award crowns a perfect 2016 for the Lioness, who won the three fights she competed in the year. She opened the proceedings with a decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko, in January. In July, she became UFC bantamweight champion by submitting Miesha Tate and defended his title with a knockout over Ronda Rousey at UFC 207, the last event of 2016.
Besides Amanda nunes, Conor McGregor received the Fighter of the Year award after becoming the first athlete to be UFC champion in two categories at the same time. The Irish lost to Nate diaz in February, but won the rematch in August and, in November, knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become owner of the featherweight belt (won in 2015) and the lightweight belt simultaneously.
Middleweight champion, Michael Bisping was voted Zebra of the Year. This is because few thought he would be able to win Luke Rockhold in the main fight of UFC 199. The Brit had already been submitted by the North American and entered the event with less than two weeks to prepare. Bisping knocked out Rockhold in the first round. cody garbrandt, who became bantamweight champion after starting 2016 outside the division's ranking, was awarded the Newcomer of the Year trophy. Dana White received the Manager of the Year award.
