Former challenger for the flyweight belt, Dodson moved up to the bantamweight category after losing for the second time to the champion Demetrious Johnson. In the new division, he has already had two fights: he beat Manvel Gamburyan, in April 2016, and was beaten on points by John Lineker, last October.
Wineland, in turn, has two consecutive victories, both by knockout. He beat Frankie Saenz in July last year and Takeya Mizugaki in December. The American has already competed for the interim belt in the division against the former champion Renan Barao, in September 2013, but was knocked out in the second round.
