Heavyweight Cain Velásquez surprised by revealing one of his methods for healing a back injury: using cannabidiol (CBD), one of the components of marijuana that has medicinal properties. According to the fighter, who has a fight scheduled against the Brazilian Fabricio Werdum at UFC 207, on December 30th, in Las Vegas, the use of the drug, which is in the form of an oral spray, is one of the alternatives for him to withstand the pain and not withdraw from the fight.

“It's the only thing that allows me to continue training, and I'm not taking any dangerous painkillers that could get me addicted later. I don't know what everyone will think after I say this, but it's just one of the hard facts that we fighters need to face. In the past, in the NFL (professional American football league in the USA), players became addicted to painkillers. I don't want to be some kind of addict”, argued Velásquez, in an interview with the website 'ESPN.com'.
The use of medical marijuana is permitted in California, where Cain trains and resides. USADA (US Anti-Doping Agency), responsible for anti-doping control in the UFC, does not prohibit the use of “social drugs” outside the competition period, as they are not considered an advantage or improvement in performance. However, use is prohibited in a time window that runs from six hours before the official weigh-in to six hours after the fight.
Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum they will face each other for the second time. In the first, in June 2015, the Brazilian submitted the North American and won the linear belt in the heavyweight division. A rematch between them was scheduled for February this year, but an injury to Cain made it impossible for the duel to take place.
