Jon Jones received a one-year suspension after being caught in a surprise drug test shortly before his fight at UFC 200, in July. The North American went on trial this Monday (7), in Las Vegas (USA).

The punishment will be applied to Jones retroactively, referring to the date on which his exam results were announced. Thus, the interim light heavyweight champion will be fully cleared to fight again in July 2017.

During the trial, Jones claimed that he ingested a sexual stimulant pill shortly before taking the exam. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), a UFC partner, carried out tests on the medicine and confirmed that, in fact, it was contaminated.

Even so, the Nevada commissioners judged that the fighter was “dismissive” in the episode, which resulted in the maximum punishment provided for by the regulations, taking into account the type of substance that was detected.

Jones was withdrawn at the last minute from UFC 200, when he was scheduled to face Daniel Cormier for the definitive belt in the category. At the time, the athlete was caught taking clomiphene and Letrozole, both estrogen blockers. As these are not substances that provide direct performance gains, the punishment provided for by the regulation was slightly milder than conventional.
