Even at the 2.250 meter altitude of Mexico City, the athletes did not feel tired and carried out a highly technical and busy duel in the Octagon. Dos Anjos started better, with good use of a combination of hands and dodges to avoid his rival's counterattack.
However, from the following round onwards, Ferguson found his distance and started to take advantage of his greater reach. The American connected with the Brazilian's face more frequently, especially jabs, and, despite having unintentionally poked Dos Anjos in the eye, he ended the round with an advantage.
In the third round, Dos Anjos reacted and once again bothered Ferguson, who tried to respond with both blows and provocations. But, from then on, the American set the pace: he overcame Dos Anjos with good combinations, resisted counterattacks well and closed the remaining two rounds on a high note.
In the official decision, the three judges pointed to victory for Ferguson in three rounds, against two for the Brazilian. In this way, the North American obtains his ninth consecutive victory, something unprecedented until then in the lightweight division. Dos Anjos, who lost the belt in his most recent fight, has his second consecutive setback.
