About to make his first defense of the UFC lightweight belt, Eddie Alvarez has a very clear mission in mind: defeat Conor McGregor at UFC 205 and take the first step towards becoming the division's greatest fighter of all time.

Alvarez won the belt in July of this year, when he beat Rafael dos Anjos still in the first round. His first title defense will be against the champion of the lower category, the featherweights. The North American sees the fight as an opportunity to rest before facing the “hard work” of the weight class again.

“I will become the best lightweight in UFC history. That's what's going to happen, and it's going to start with him [McGregor]. Afterwards, I will continue to face the best placed challengers who belong to that position. I feel like I deserved a rest, and this will be my rest. After that, I will face real challengers, who have earned their position to compete for the title, not guys who have funny accents and sell tickets”, he teased, in a conference call held by the UFC.

The fight between Alvarez and McGregor will headline UFC 205 on November 12th. The show, which will feature two other title fights (Stephen Thompson x Tyron woodley at welterweight and Joanna Jedrzejczyk x Karolina Kowalkiewicz in the women's strawweight division), will mark the organization's debut in New York City.
