The duel would mark the return of B.J. Penn to the Octagon, who had retired in 2014. At 37 years old, the veteran is one of the most important names in the organization's history.
Of the 28 fights he had as an MMA professional, 23 were in Ultimate, with 13 wins, nine losses and two draws, in addition to having won the belts in two different categories in the UFC: lightweight and welterweight.
