Despite his elimination from the Strikeforce heavyweight GP, the Brazilian Fabricio Werdum may have reason to celebrate in the coming weeks. The fighter was nominated for the 2011 ESPY Awards, an award that will be held on July 13th in the United States and will select the best athletes who stood out in their respective sports between the second half of 2010 and the present.
Werdum's name appears in the “Zebra of the Year” category, where his submission victory over Fedor Emelianenko, in June last year at Strikeforce, is one of four candidates for the award. The Brazilian's victory ended an unbeaten run of 28 fights in the career of the Russian athlete who was considered at the time the clear favorite to win the match.
Those who will also be representing MMA in this edition of the ESPY Awards will be the UFC champions Georges St-Pierre (welterweight) and Jon Jones (light heavyweight), competing for the “Best Fighter” award.
In total, there will be 33 categories up for grabs at the 2011 ESPY Awards. Voting is open to the general public and will continue until the 9th at the following address: http://espn.go.com/espys/#!/voting/. The winners will be announced on July 13th at a ceremony to be held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
