UFC President Dana White expressed his desire to see Conor McGregor defending the featherweight belt against José Aldo in his next appearance in the Octagon, which would immediately rule out the Irishman's plans to compete for the lightweight title.
Recently, White revealed that Khabib Nurmagomedov should be Eddie Alvarez's next challenger for the under-70 kg division belt. Many considered that the choice was made due to the fact that McGregor would be injured and would not be able to face the lightweight champion.
However, White said he opted for Nurmagomedov because he has other plans for McGregor. “Conor’s foot is injured, but he thinks he can fight. I want him to fight with Aldo”, explained the manager, in an interview with the North American website “Yahoo Sports”.
Thus, the choice of the undefeated Nurmagomedov for the title fight has a logical explanation for White: “He is the number one challenger”, he commented.
McGregor won the UFC featherweight belt in December last year, when he beat Aldo, but has yet to defend it once. In the two fights he had next in the octagon, he faced Nate diaz in fights valid for the welterweight division (up to 77 kg).
