Dana White considers including flyweights in the UFC

In a press conference held last night (09), UFC president, Dana White, stated that a new weight category should soon be included in the organization. In addition to the seven existing divisions, the event will now feature flyweight athletes, a category with a limit of up to 57 kg.

“We will possibly include flyweight athletes in our squad by the end of this year. First we have to create the division, hire athletes and hold the first fights. Then we will select the best for a valid fight for the category belt”, he highlighted.

Still according to White, there are several ways to define the first champion of the category in the UFC. Among the options mentioned by the director, the highlight is the dispute of a GP, where the fighters would face each other in eliminatory clashes until the final of the tournament, with the winner of the dispute declared the holder of the new belt of the Ultimate.

Currently the main flyweight fighters are found in Japanese organizations and at Tachi Palace Fights, an event based in the United States that features the Brazilian Jussier “Ant” among the prominent names in the category.
