Antonio Pezão will experience a situation considered delicate by many MMA fighters this Saturday (24). On the main card of UFC Brasilia, the fighter will share the octagon with a great personal friend, fellow veteran Roy Nelson. However, he guarantees that the friendship between the two will remain intact after the duel.
Pezão and Nelson are close friends and have trained together in the past. The Brazilian assured that, regardless of the result of the fight, he will take the North American to a hearty dinner at a steakhouse. “We are friends, we spent 15 days in Romania participating in a film there. We became brothers, because we were together for many hours, in the same setting, staying in the same hotel. Then he came to ATT, where we spent another month and a half together. We have a very good relationship. My first birthday message was from my wife, the second was from Roy Nelson. We have a good alliance, we are professionals. If we could choose another opponent, we would, but we have to do what the boss says. After the fight, we will be together, we will hug. We’re going to ‘kill’ two oxen, five chickens and three sheep at the steakhouse”, he joked, in an interview with the “Combate” channel website.
Many other MMA fighters avoid facing their friends as much as possible. Pezão sees no problem with the situation. “I can share things, even when I didn't even know about the fight, he told me we would fight. We have children, a wife, a family, but, after the fight, life goes on. In volleyball or football, brother plays against brother. After it's over, we hug, there's no need to have enmity. MMA is a sport like any other,” he explained.
Pezão and Nelson are going through a delicate phase in the UFC. The Brazilian has won just once in his last seven fights, while the American has lost six of his most recent eight.
