UFC studies pension for retired athletes

Dana White

After consolidating itself as the largest MMA organization today, the UFC begins to focus its work on the safety and well-being of its athletes. After launching, last month, insurance to cover fighters' injuries, Dana White, president of the organization, announced that he is studying the possibility of a pension for retired athletes.

“If we can figure out some way to offer a fighter pension, that's something I'd love to do,” Dana White said during the UFC 130 press conference. “We're trying to avoid a situation where these guys retire with nothing.” . The top hat guarantees that while the pension fund is still just a project, the organization tries to help athletes in managing their salaries.

“The pension sounds like a great idea, but it is very difficult to make viable,” White said. “For now, while we don’t have (the pension), the UFC is focused on educating its fighters on how to manage their money”, added the top hat.

The idea for creating this pension was Quinton’s “Rampage” Jackson, who will be in the main fight of UFC 28 next Saturday (130). For the fighter, the life of an athlete is quite short and they need to have security after hanging up their gloves.

"I look at Mike Tyson, in a great moment, and today? Fans don't understand when I say that I want to pursue other paths after fighting (Rampage has already starred in some films at the cinema). Honestly, fighting is a great job and the UFC has done a lot for me, but it's not forever,” he concluded.
