Commission makes mistakes and Sonnen could return in June

With unprecedented rigor in its judgments, the California State Athletic Commission condemned, last week, for the second time, Chael Sonnen for the athlete's doping at UFC 117, when the North American was defeated by the Brazilian Anderson Silva, in the fight for the Ultimate middleweight belt.

In the decision of Thursday, the 18th, the entity suspended Sonnen for an indefinite period, and the fighter could seek a new license to fight only in June 2012. However, to the surprise of many, the executive director of the Commission, George Dodd , wrote a note this weekend, stating that the interpretation of the trial was wrong.

“After the judgment of May 18, 2011, the Commission made an error in the application of article 399,” the note said. According to the clarification, Chael will be able to request a new permission to fight in June this year.

“My understanding is that he (Chael Sonnen) is free to apply for the license after June 29th”, he stated. “However, he will have to appear before the Commission and make a new request for evaluation”, added the director.

With the possibility of returning to combat in 2011, Sonnen, who had stated his interest in retiring after last week's decision, is once again being considered to command one of the teams in the fourteenth edition of The Ultimate Fighter, the reality show of UFC, against the English Michael Bisping.
