Chad Mendes: “I can be champion”

After making his first title defense in Ultimate, Brazilian José Aldo is expected to return to the Octagon against the undefeated Chad Mendes, in a duel that could take place at UFC 133, in Philadelphia, or UFC 134, in Rio de Janeiro. Still without official confirmation of the confrontation, the North American athlete commented, in an interview with Pro MMA radio, the excitement of fighting for the UFC belt.

“I never thought I would be fighting for the UFC title in less than three years. This is incredible”, said Mendes, who commented on his training for stand-up fighting, the Brazilian’s specialty. “I've been working on my stand-up game since the first day I trained in MMA. I have a foundation in wrestling and I try to be versatile”, he added.

With 10 wins in 10 fights in his career, Chad analyzed José Aldo's performance at UFC 129, an event held on April 30, when the Brazilian fighter defeated Mark hominick in the unanimous decision of the judges.

PUBLICITY:

“Honestly I don’t think he (Aldo) will take me down with those falls. He's explosive, we all know that, and he did a great job, but I don't think Hominick defended very well”, said Mendes, who claims to be confident of defeating the Brazilian fighter. “I have to go back and watch his fights again. Definitely seeing his performance in the last round against Hominick (when Aldo was taken down and punished on the ground) was a special motivation for me. Everyone thinks that Aldo is not human, but I will show that he is… There is no doubt in my mind: I can be champion”,
