The Brazilian Maiquel Falcao his contract with the UFC was terminated in the early hours of today (11). The athlete, who debuted with a victory over Gerald Harris in the 124th edition of the event, was scheduled to fight against the American Tom Lawlor at UFC Rio, scheduled for August 27th at the HSBC Arena.

In a note sent to the press, Falcão's manager, Marcelo Brigadeiro, revealed that the reasons that led UFC officials to fire the athlete were the problems that the fighter currently faces with the Brazilian justice system. Still according to the statement, both Brigadeiro and Falcão fully accepted the decision made for the event, highlighting their gratitude for the Ultimate due to the opportunity given to the gaucho to debut internationally in his career.

“Although we are sad, we respect the UFC's decision and hope to be back at the biggest event in the world very soon. I think that events like this serve to re-evaluate a lot of things, learn and move forward and you can be sure that Maiquel Falcão will move forward”, said the businessman in an official statement.

With Falcão's dismissal, UFC Rio now has seven confirmed fights. It has not yet been revealed by North American officials whether Lawlor remains scheduled for the 134th edition of the organization. Check out the fights scheduled for UFC Rio below:
