With his eyes on the long-awaited opportunity to fight for the UFC welterweight belt, Demian Maia took an important step last Saturday (27), when he ran over Carlos Condit in the main fight of UFC Vancouver. However, given the crowded scenario in the category, the Brazilian considered the possibility of remaining inactive for months until he receives the chance to fight for the title.

Demian, 38, scored his sixth consecutive victory by submitting Condit, the former interim champion, in less than two minutes. The jiu-jitsu black belt hopes that this will be enough for him to win the opportunity, but admits that Stephen Thompson, with seven victories in a row, be the champion's next rival Tyron woodley.
“I respect Thompson a lot, he’s a great guy. Of course, I'm a lot older than him, so if they gave me the title fight first, that would be great. Otherwise, I hope they give him the chance to fight for the belt quickly, and I would wait to face the winner”, commented the Brazilian, in an interview with the North American broadcaster “FOX Sports”.
Asked if he would prefer to wait or have another fight scheduled so as not to be inactive for too long, Demian was clear. "I hope. I can stay active in training, teaching classes, doing what I do every day. The guy I beat is not only a former champion, but he's also the guy that a lot of people, including me, think beat Robbie Lawler [former welterweight champion] and who should be the champion. So what else should I do? I have six wins in a row, that’s it”, he added.
