Melendez wants to unify Strikeforce and UFC titles

Undisputed Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, Gilbert Melendez took no notice of Tatsuya Kawajiri, last Saturday (9), and knocked out the Japanese in the first round, successfully defending his belt. Now, the North American is already thinking about taking new flights and seeking new achievements. After the purchase of Strikeforce by the UFC, Melendez stated that he wants to perform in Ultimate and unify the lightweight division titles.

“Well, let me tell you, I think it’s time to unify some titles,” said Gilbert. “Does anyone want to see me fight for that title in the UFC? I will unify these belts. I'm the best lightweight in the world, you can be sure of that”, said the black belt.

Before attempting unification, Gilbert Melendez, whose record has 19 victories in 21 appearances, will put his title on the line once again. According to Scott Coker, president of Strikeforce, César Gracie's pupil is expected to compete against the winner of the fight between Justin Wilcox and Jorge masvidal, with no confirmed date yet.
