Chael Sonnen went through a delicate moment in his personal life. Blauna Dian Sonnen, the athlete's daughter, died on August 17, five days after being born prematurely in Portland, United States. Brittany, Sonnen's wife, contracted a bacteria called listeria, transmitted mainly by eating contaminated food, which resulted in the child's premature birth. A week after the trauma, Chael spoke for the first time.
"I was in the hospital. Things weren't going as planned. I was having a bad week. I left to come here and talk to you – talking helps. Help. It doesn't matter if you're an introvert or if you're Mister Personality, man. There is a reason therapy exists. Use it any way you want. With a guy in a private room, or in my case, I came to the studio and talked to you guys. I liked the answer. I liked the support. (…) My daughter was in a difficult situation. The Lord called her. We narrowly lost that battle, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I thank you very much. I am the Chael Sonnen, and I'm grateful,” Sonnen said on his podcast, “You're Welcome.”
Blauna Dian Sonnen was born on August 12th, about ten weeks earlier than expected. Just like the hand, the child was also born with the disease and was immediately transported to the maximum care area of the hospital. However, she did not survive and died last Wednesday. Chael and Brittany have been married since 2013 and already have a son, Thero, born in 2015.
The 39-year-old American has been away from MMA since November 2013, when he had his last fight – he was defeated by Rashad evans by technical knockout. The athlete considered returning to MMA, but it is not yet known whether the personal drama will affect his plans.
