the return of Conor McGregor to the featherweight category, in which he is champion, seems increasingly unlikely. The Irishman's head coach, John Kavanagh, declared that he “doesn't see the point” in a possible new fight in the UFC's under-66 kg division.

McGregor won the featherweight belt in December last year with a quick knockout over José Aldo. Since then, he has had two more fights, both against Nate diaz in the welterweight division (up to 77 kg).
UFC president Dana White recently stated that the Irishman should return to his original category. However, Kavanagh disagrees. “I really don't see the point in this. With all due respect to the featherweight guys, but after the fight with Nate, what are they going to do? What is someone going to do with it? Against any fighter in that category, it would be like he was cheating with the power he has”, said the coach, in an interview with the podcast “The MMA Hour”.
Therefore, Kavanagh sees the definitive move to the under-70 kg category as a natural next step for his athlete. “For me, I will encourage him to fight at lightweight. It's just my big brother opinion. I would like to see him in the lightweight division. It would be cool to see him win the lightweight title and then defend it against Nate. I think it would be an incredible fight. Maybe in Croke Park [football stadium] in Dublin. How cool would that be?” he questioned.
