UFC announces purchase of Strikeforce

Dana White

ZUFFA, the company that owns the UFC, took another step towards a global monopoly on MMA events. Ultimate's president, Dana White, surprised the world this Saturday by announcing the purchase of Strikeforce, his organization's biggest competitor.

“We are growing all over the world and we need more fights. Let's admit it: Strikeforce is a brand that fans have started to like and follow, so it made sense for us (to buy the event). Our job is to put on the fights that the fans want to see”, said the UFC president, in an interview with the North American website MMA Fighting.

Despite the acquisition, White stated that Strikeforce will not cease to exist and its main stars such as Overeem, Fedor, Werdum and Henderson are not expected to fight for the UFC anytime soon.

“They have a contract to fulfill,” said Dana, stating, however, that Ultimate fighters may appear on a Strikeforce card.

Until this weekend, UFC and Strikeforce were the biggest franchises in world MMA. Event managers even exchanged a series of provocations to enhance their promotions.
