Former UFC featherweight fighter Shahbulat Shamhalaev survived a series of gunshots while in a restaurant in the city of Makhachkala, in Dagestan (Russia).
On Wednesday night (1st) local time, Shamhalaev was shot five times by armed men and was immediately transported to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition is currently serious, but stable, and the fighter ended up losing a kidney. He remains admitted to the hospital's ICU.
At 32 years old, Shamhalaev has a professional record of 12 wins, three losses and one draw. In 2013, he won the Bellator GP title, which gave him the right to challenge for the featherweight belt. The Russian ended up submitted by Pat Curran in the first round, and then lost again to Brazilian Fabrício Guerreiro. It was his last professional MMA fight to date.
