Aoki vs. Melendez should not happen on Dynamite 2010

Rematch between Melendez (e) and Aoki (d) should be postponed

The 2010 edition of Dynamite is expected to suffer a major loss on its card. The fight between Gilbert Melendez, Strikeforce lightweight champion, and Shinya Aoki, owner of the Dream belt, was expected for the traditional Japanese event that takes place at the turn of the year, however, a clause in Gilbert's contract should postpone the clash.

According to a report from the North American website MMA Fighting, the fighter's agreement with Strikeforce is coming to an end, which makes it impossible to hold a fight at another event without a contract renewal. According to Scott Coker, Strikeforce representative, the contract does not guarantee the event a title defense for Melendez after the contract, which would make it unfeasible for him to fight in another organization in a short space of time.

“It’s not anyone’s problem,” Coker said. “It’s just a deal that can’t happen. Everyone is very upset,” he added.

In the first fight between Melendez and Aoki, held in April this year, the North American dominated the fight during the five rounds and defeated the Japanese athlete with a unanimous decision from the judges. The duel was for the Strikeforce belt and Melendez successfully defended his title.
