One of the great myths in the world of combat sports is that you should avoid having sexual relations on dates close to fights. Many athletes go into abstinence mode as they approach their fights, but this is not the case for Daniel Cormier, current UFC light heavyweight champion.

The fighter states that he does not feel willing to make the sacrifice of depriving himself of the things he enjoys just to prioritize his preparation. “Eight weeks before the fight, do I rule everything out? Am I going to settle down, not watch TV and just train for eight weeks? I do not do this. I love my wife and I’m not going to abstain from that,” said Cormier, in an interview with presenter Colin Cowherd’s podcast.

However, Cormier understands the logic behind the attitude of those who avoid sex before fights. “I understand the thinking that by discarding sex and depriving yourself of the things that make you who you are, you become hungrier. I understand that the idea is to pass the fight so I can return to my wife”, he pondered.

Cormier will return to the UFC octagon on July 9th, when he will have a rematch against Jon Jones in the main fight of UFC 200. The duel will take place in the city of Las Vegas, in the United States.
