Over the past few months, Jon Jones collected controversies and many of them were involved with the consumption of recreational drugs. About to return to the Octagon after being suspended and stripped of his UFC light heavyweight belt, Jones decided to break his silence and talk about his history with drugs for the first time, publicly admitting that he was addicted.

“I was an addict. People don't realize that you can be an addict even without appearing to be. If you smoke when you wake up, before eating, before training, before sleeping, before watching a movie and before studying, for example, you are an addict. You don't have to use hard drugs to become addicted. If you spend a lot of money on it, and so do your friends, and if you don't hang out with people who are always sober, you're an addict. I think that's the problem people have with marijuana. They don’t consider marijuana a drug,” the fighter told the North American newspaper “USA Today”.

Caught in a drug test last year with cocaine metabolites in his system, Jones did not talk about using stimulant drugs, but said he used marijuana regularly. “Smoking was literally what I did between fights. I sat there, enjoying life and thinking I was a hippie. I didn't feel like I was hurting anyone and I didn't feel like a bad person. And I started to like being like that, because I felt that it protected me from all the negativity and evil in the world. I only came out of my personal cave to fight,” he assured.

Jon Jones returns to the octagon next Saturday (23), in front of Ovince St Preux in the main fight of UFC 197. The duel between Bones and OSP will be valid for the interim belt in the light heavyweight category, and the chance to later challenge the linear champion Daniel Cormier in the unification of titles.
