The tragic death of Portuguese fighter João Carvalho placed MMA on the sport's list of fatalities. After all, it is rare to see the death of a mixed martial arts athlete during a professional level fight, as, until then, tragedies only took into account parallel events such as the official weigh-in of fights.

However, the history of combat sports is full of fatalities. It is estimated that more than 1200 professional fighters have lost their lives as a result of injuries sustained in boxing matches, with some cases claiming the lives of promising and popular athletes.
