A worrying situation marked the Total Extreme Fighting 1 event, held in the city of Dublin, Ireland, last Saturday (9). Charlie Ward, teammate of Conor McGregor at the Straight Blast Gym, left Portuguese João Carvalho in critical condition after beating him by technical knockout in the third round.

The fight, held in the welterweight category (up to 77 kg), was defined by a series of blows from Ward, while Carvalho barely managed to resist. The scene itself was not unusual in relation to other knockouts in MMA (check out the video below), and the Portuguese did not present any problems in the tests carried out immediately after the fight.

However, around 20 minutes later, Carvalho began to feel ill and was transported to a hospital, where he remains hospitalized. “Our thoughts are with João Carvalho and his family. His well-being is our main focus at the moment, but we will bring you updates on João’s situation when everything becomes clearer,” said Cesar Silva, executive director of Total Extreme Fighting.

McGregor, who was there to support his training partners, gave his opinion to the “MMA Connect TV” website: “I thought the fight could have been stopped a little earlier than it was. I think these referees need to be more on top of the situation”, he analyzed.
