The American won the WEC bantamweight belt by defeating his compatriot Brian Bowles by technical knockout at WEC 47, held on March 6th. On August 18, Cruz was successful in defending his title by defeating, for the second time in his career, fellow American Joseph Benavidez by split decision of the judges at WEC 50.

His challenger will be Scott Jorgensen, who will have his tenth fight at the event, this being his first title fight. The athlete has 14 wins and three losses in MMA, qualifying for the bantamweight title after five consecutive victories in the WEC. In his last fight, held on August 18th, Jorgensen defeated the Englishman Brad pickett by unanimous decision of the judges.

In the light weights, the black belt in Taekwondo and current champion of the category, Ben henderson, will defend, in addition to his belt, his five-fight unbeaten record in the WEC. Henderson won the category title by submitting the then champion via guillotine Donald Cerrone at WEC 48, on April 24th this year. It is worth noting that on this occasion Henderson was the interim lightweight champion, unifying the titles by defeating Cerrone in the first round of the fight.

In turn, the North American Anthony Pettis will try to win his first belt at the event. Pettis has five fights in the WEC, being the winner on four occasions. In his last fight, he beat Shane Roller by submission (triangle choke) at WEC 50, qualifying for the lightweight title fight.
