A clash between two of the main names in the welterweight category could be close to happening. The Ultimate organization works to promote a duel between the North American Stephen Thompson and the canadian Rory McDonald.

Rory McDonald fought for the welterweight title in July last year, but ended up defeated by Robbie Lawler in the co-main event of UFC 189, in a fight that was awarded “Fight of the Year 2015”. Already Stephen Thompson comes from six consecutive victories and is highly rated for a title shot. The information was released by UFC Tonight, the official Ultimate newspaper on North American TV.

The training partner and pupil of Georges St Pierre won eight of his last ten fights, the exceptions were precisely the two defeats to Robbie Lawler – including the setback in the title fight. MacDonald currently ranks first in the 77 kg division.
Yes, Stephen Thompson, 33 years old, has a record of 12 wins and only one loss in professional MMA. The multi-time kickboxing champion knocked out the former champion John hendricks in his last fight, in February, and is currently number two in the welterweight category rankings.
