A controversial fight marked the Sparta Combat League amateur MMA event, held last Saturday (20), in Denver, in the United States. A 68-year-old woman was brutally knocked out by an opponent 44 years younger in the first round of the duel, which provoked widespread criticism from the public.
Despite her advanced age, Ann Perez de Tejada had her first MMA fight after years of practicing Muay Thai and reaching her blue belt in jiu-jitsu. In her pre-fight statements, she showed confidence in victory: “I want to have a good fight and prove to people that age is just a number,” she said.
However, Laura Dettman's youth made the difference: the 24-year-old fighter pressed on her feet and cornered her opponent, taking the fight to the ground and getting the knockout a few seconds later.
After receiving several criticisms, the promoter of the Sparta Combat League, Jeff Cisneros, defended his decision to select the elderly woman for the fight, stating that he allowed her to participate at the request of her coaches. According to him, Ann Perez had a long-time dream of doing an MMA fight.
