A fight originally scheduled for December 2015 will end up taking place next April. Escalated to face Tony Ferguson, Michael Johnson was cut from UFC 197 and in his place the Ultimate organization announced the entry of the Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov. The fight will also be transferred to UFC on FOX 19, scheduled for April 16, at a location yet to be determined.
The reasons behind Johnson's dismissal were not disclosed by the organization. With the change, although it has not been made official, it is very likely that the winner of the fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, respectively second and fifth in the official rankings, will be the next challenger for the lightweight title.
Still undefeated as a professional, and with six wins in the UFC, Khabib Nurmagomedov hasn't fought since April 2014, when he defeated the current lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. Now, Ferguson, TUF 13 champion, has won seven consecutive victories in the Octagon, the most recent of which was over Edson Barboza in December last year.
