Last week, it was revealed that McGregor would move up in weight to challenge the lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos. However, on Monday (11), the website of the “Combate” channel reported that plans are in check, as the Irishman, UFC featherweight champion, would have asked for a raise to take the fight.
In an interview with “The MMA Hour” podcast, McGregor's kickboxing coach, Owen Roddy, clarified what was going on. “All I know based on what I’ve heard from Conor is that he’s going to fight on March 5th. The opponent is still open. It could be Dos Anjos or any other. But the point is that Conor has his eyes on the fight on March 5th. Realistically, everyone wants to see Conor, so the opponent doesn't matter. I'm sure he'll fight on March 5th, so stay tuned,” explained Roddy.
McGregor's head coach, Jon Kavanagh, reinforced his words on Twitter: “Roddy put it perfectly. We will be there on March 5th, no matter who the opponent is. That’s all we can say about UFC 197,” he clarified.
