In the weeks leading up to the defeat of Ronda Rousey for Holly holm at UFC 193, there was a huge disagreement between the mother of former champion AnnMaria De Mars, who was not seen during the event in Melbourne (Australia), and her trainer Edmond Tarverdyan. After the blonde's traumatic setback, the controversy involving the coach gained another chapter and according to Rousey's former training partner Georgi Karakhanyan, it is the fighter's mother who is right.

“I think Ronda, she makes her own choices. Maybe she should listen to her mother more. I think whatever her mother wants her to do, she should do it. I don't think it's my choice for her to leave academia. That’s up to her”, said Karakhanyan, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”. “I think she should do more sparring with MMA gloves instead of boxing gloves. (…) I think Ronda opened a lot of windows for women in MMA. She has done a lot for the sport, so the amount of criticism she is receiving is unfair. She really did a lot for MMA. I think if she changes her training, she can be champion again. But Holly holm It’s on a different level,” he added.

Despite the criticism, however, Karakhanyan said that Edmond cannot be blamed entirely for Ronda's downfall, although he returned to making observations about the GFC leader's training methods. “You can’t blame the coach all the time. But let me tell you something too, she was looking good on the sideboards, right? Anyone can look amazing on the trimmers. I can shadow for ten hours in front of the mirror and that's kind of false information for me, I'll think 'Wow, man, I'm ready for this fight'”, he concluded.
