The complex relationship between the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain has a long history and spans ethnic, political, religious and territorial issues, such as the independence of Northern Ireland and its accession to the United Kingdom. This Thursday (29), the current interim UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor He was in the middle of the “firing line” of the conflict and did not shy away from the controversy, making a statement that incited both his Irish and British compatriots.

It all started after the publication of an image in which McGregor appears wearing a brooch with the poppy flower, a symbol of the British army to honor its soldiers killed in combat. Called, among other things, a “sellout” and “disrespectful” by the Irish, the “Notorious” responded without much shame on his official page on Facebook.

“I know who I am loyal to and what I do for my country. I don't need a stupid little flower with 100 different meanings to tell me whether or not I represent my country. Check the facts about the original meaning. ALL soldiers. ALL wars. I have the blood of many nations on my gloves. I fought and won on a global stage. You have a mug in one hand and a Celtic shirt in your location. F*** you and the Queen”, wrote the fighter.

Possibly now divided even in the support of his countrymen, and certainly in the face of not much happier Britons, Conor McGregor returns to the Octagon on December 12th, in Las Vegas (USA). On that date, the interim featherweight champion challenges the Brazilian José Aldo, holder of the linear title, in the unification of the category belts. The highly anticipated clash between McGregor and Aldo will be the main fight of UFC 194.
