Despite already having a rematch against Fabricio Werdum guaranteed, in a duel with no official date yet to take place, the former heavyweight champion Cain Velazquez does not seem to have forgotten his first meeting with the Brazilian, in which he lost the title of the 120 kg division, in Mexico. In an interview, Velasquez recalled the defeat and said that he did not adequately prepare for the challenge of facing Werdum at altitude.

“I should have prepared better, but I didn't. So, about that, there's nothing you can do. It was my first time fighting at that kind of altitude, so you learn from your mistake and move on. Next time, if this happens again one day, I already know what I have to do”, said the former champion, in an interview with the official “UFC” website.

Furthermore, Velasquez also commented on the criticism he receives for his long hiatuses in the Octagon, most of the time caused by injuries, and promised that he will be a more active fighter in the future. “I would like to be a more active fighter. I also wish I didn't have any injuries, I would love things to be like that (laughs). But about the future, I don't think about that. I try to deal with things day by day. As for my legacy, obviously that is something that people will decide in the future. The only thing I can do is give it my all when I step into the Octagon,” he stated.

At 33, Cain Velazquez has a professional MMA record of 13 wins and two losses. In the rematch against Fabricio Werdum, which should take place in the first half of 2016, the American of Mexican descent will complete seven consecutive fights against just three Brazilian opponents: Werdum himself, Junior Gypsy e Antonio Pezão.
