When the Ultimate organization announced that Frankie Edgar would face Chad Mendes on the eve of José Aldo x Conor McGregor, many fans and experts understood the schedule as an indication that there is already a “Plan B” in case there is a problem with the unification of the featherweight belts. And this, according to Edgar himself, is really the plan of the event, as revealed to him by president Dana White.

“If someone (between Aldo or McGregor) gets hurt, I'm the guy who will come in as a replacement. And that's what Dana White said: 'You can print this in big letters!'”, Edgar told the official UFC website in Canada. “I want that title. That, for me, is the most important thing. Conor may be the money fight, but when you win that title it stays with you forever. Money comes and goes, but you are a champion for the rest of your life. I did that at lightweight and I want to do the same at featherweight,” he added.
