Used to fighting intense battles inside the UFC octagon, Dan Hardy will face a different, but no less complicated, challenge. The former candidate for the welterweight belt of the largest MMA organization on the planet takes part in the first stage of the Clipper Race, a sailing event that runs from London to Rio de Janeiro.

Hardy, who until then had never had any experience in the industry, is part of the Great Britain team, sharing his boat with 23 other people. The race started last Sunday (30) and should last a month until everyone can reach Brazil – totaling 8,400 km of distance.

“Racing at sea is very unpredictable. In MMA, you fight for 15 or 25 minutes, so you know you're going to use your energy for this period. But, at sea, you need to be prepared to stay focused for 20 hours, sometimes even longer”, compared the fighter. “My family, of course, worries about my safety. When you're on earth and you get hurt, there's probably a hospital within a few miles. But at sea, help can take days,” he added.

Hardy, 33 years old, challenged for the welterweight belt in early 2010, losing to Georges St Pierre in the judges' decision. An athlete from the biggest MMA organization on the planet between 2008 and 2012, the Englishman had six wins and four losses in the Octagon.
