Shortly after the victory of Conor McGregor about Chad Mendes in the interim belt dispute at UFC 189, the Ultimate organization announced that the Irishman would be one of the coaches of the The Ultimate Fighter 22 beside Urijah faber. However, the idea almost ended up not being just on paper, as McGregor himself revealed in an interview.

“Before the fight I was excited, I had a lot of options. I would fight against José Aldo and would do TUF with Chad Mendes, who he would probably fight next. That was the initial plan. When everything changed and they gave me Urijah faber as a new coach, and I was told I wouldn't fight him, my energy was gone. I no longer wanted to do the reality show, because it no longer meant anything to me”, said the interim champion, in an interview with the website of the North American channel “FOX Sports”.

TUF 22 will feature two teams, one made up of European athletes and the other solely made up of North Americans, led respectively by McGregor and Faber. The reality show, which is already being recorded in Las Vegas, will debut on US TV in September.

After the reality show, Conor McGregor will finally step into the octagon against José Aldo. The duel to unify the Ultimate featherweight belts will be the main fight of UFC 194, an event scheduled for December 12th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, also in Vegas.
