During the week when José Aldo suffered a rib injury and had to leave the fight against Conor McGregor at UFC 189, one of the Brazilian's biggest critics was the former fighter Chael Sonnen, who accused him of “running” from the fight. Now, weeks after the controversy, Sonnen revealed that he was threatened by the featherweight champion's lawyers, who called and said they were going to sue him, which they had also done with the UFC.
“I received a phone call. It was a lawyer from Brazil threatening to sue me for defamation. Your client? José Aldo. They said they wouldn't sue me if I stopped talking about it. I just repeated this information. I heard this story at a UFC press conference. The lawyer said: 'Yes, pay attention in the next few days because you won't hear the UFC saying anything else because before threatening you with a lawsuit, we threatened them with a lawsuit,'” said Sonnen, during the latest edition of his podcast, “You’re Welcome.”
Then, with his usual ironic style, Chael said that now, after the quasi-judicial episode, he believes the Brazilian's version. “I have to assume he is telling the truth. José Aldo is threatening to sue me and the UFC. This is a very big bluff. This is such a big bluff that I admit he is telling the truth,” she concluded.
