Confirmation of Aldo's departure from the card was made by UFC president, Dana White, through a live appearance on SportsCenter from the USA. “André Pederneiras (technician José Aldo) called me and said that Aldo's rib injury is very painful and that he won't fight. Then, Chad Mendes will face Conor McGregor for the interim belt. Conor is ready to fight. The number one guy in the world, Chad Mendes, is ready to fight. So, that makes sense. They will fight for the interim title and when the José Aldo Once ready, we will fight for the unification of the belts,” said White.

Dana White, president of the franchise, despite not contesting the Brazilian's injury, was not satisfied with the attitude of José Aldo to withdraw from the fight. “It’s his (Aldo) decision.
