Despite the uncertainty, John Kavanagh assured that the Irishman is calm regarding the duel for the belt, whether interim or linear

After days of apprehension, the Ultimate organization put an end to the suspense and confirmed the fight between José Aldo e Conor McGregor, but also guaranteed an alternative by announcing the entry of Chad Mendes and the creation of an interim belt if the Brazilian is unable to perform. The decision on who will actually be the Irishman's opponent, however, should only be made on the eve of UFC 189, moments before the event's official weigh-in. The guarantor is McGregor's coach, John Kavanagh.

“The Nevada State Athletic Commission can prevent the fight against Aldo on the day of the weigh-in, the day before the fight. It is on that day that the pre-fight medical examinations will be carried out. Aldo may still want to fight, but the doctor may say no if he doesn't believe he is fit to compete. Then, it's basically out of Aldo's hands, ours or the UFC's. (In this case) Enter Chad Mendes. They asked Mendes to make weight and he will be there, so it could be him stepping on the scale instead of Aldo for all we know. This kind of thing usually happens at small regional events, but this is a UFC title fight,” wrote Kavanagh, in his weekly column in the Irish newspaper “The 42”.

Despite this, however, the leader of Straight Blast Gym (SBG Ireland) assured that the uncertainty does not bother McGregor, and used the fighter's reaction to the news as an example of this. “That’s not a big deal for us, though. It's a little exciting, to be honest. Who will step on the scale when it's time to weigh in? We won't know until weigh-in day. I went into McGregor's room and said it could be Mendes. He opened one eye, said, 'They're all the same.' And he went back to sleep. That was the most negotiation we had,” he revealed.

At least until further notice, the main duel of UFC 189, on July 11th, will mark the featherweight title fight between José Aldo e Conor McGregor. The event, which marks the highlight of the International Fight Week (International Fight Week), it will also be the first to feature new uniforms produced by Reebok, following the million-dollar agreement between Ultimate and the brand for the exclusive production and supply of sports equipment.
